FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Greetings,

As I look forward to my 2nd year as President of BEFABA, I am humbled and blessed to be part of this great organization. There are many people who came before me, and I am grateful they recognized the need for an organization that supported the interests of Black employees within the City of Aurora. These founders had a vision to see that people of color were treated fairly, with dignity and given opportunities that were denied to them in the past.

BEFABA continues to thrive and flourish almost 25 years after that first meeting of likeminded people and as we look forward to 2025, yes 2025 LOL… and will continue to support the employees who work tirelessly to see that our mission is carried out each day. BEFABA’s current executive board, Sheree VanBuren Vice President, Omar Blair Treasurer, Cassandra Webster Secretary work tirelessly alongside me to help keep things running smoothly day to day. Thank you all for the work you do and know you are appreciated!!!!!

There are many dedicated people within the City of Aurora, retired employees and community leaders who make this organization what it is, and countless hours are spent ensuring that our annual Black History Luncheon and Juneteenth celebration is a success, and scholarships are given to deserving high school students. This is the highlight of BEFABA and continues to bring joy as we can celebrate African American students who are making a difference in their lives and endeavor to continue their education after high school.

Two years ago, BEFABA, through the generous donation of Dr. Zelda DeBoyes, a retiree and long-term member of BEFABA, allowed us to give a yearly cash donation to a deserving College student which has helped struggling college students as they attempt to complete their education. Many of our retirees and current members also donate to our scholarship fund and for that I would like to thank everyone who gives not only of their time but their financial contributions through the years.

Last year BEFABA dedicated a community award named after our past President, Chanell Reed, who passed away suddenly in 2023, but throughout her 10-year leadership, was instrumental in working in the community as an advocate and had a long career with the City of Aurora. This Community Award will ensure she is never forgotten and help to recognize those in our community who are dedicated to helping those in need.

As we go forward, my goal as President is to continue to work on increasing the number of scholarships that are awarded each year, working with community members to increase awareness of BEFBA, increase and sustain our scholarship donations and work within the City of Aurora to ensure our organization continues to be an advocate for Black employees and ensure this great organization continues for many more years.

Happy Fall and Please Vote!!!

Sincerely,

Traci Bradford Walker
